Beriberi
Beriberi is disease caused by a deficiency of thiamine (Vitamin B1) that affects many systems of the body including the muscles, heart, nerves, and digestive system. It is common in parts of Southeast Asia, where white rice is the main food, and seen in people with chromic alcoholism. Work on the disease was done by the Dutch in Java, most notably by Christian Eijkman, who shared the 1929 Nobel Prize for studies using chickens, and by the British in Malaysia and the Americans in Philippines.

Thiamine (Vitamin B1) is found in fortified breads, cereals, pasta, whole grains, lean meats, fish, dried beans, peas, soybean, nuts, brown rice, egg yolks, legumes, livers and poultry. Good sources of thiamine are lean pork, beef, livers, brewer’s yeast, peas and nuts, wheat germ, enriched cereal and breads. The more refined the food, as in white rice, white breads, and some cereals, the lower the thiamine. Many food products are enriched with thiamine, along with riboflavin, niacin, and iron, to prevent dietary deficiency.
